c player taking the country by storm
CLEVELAND -- Kyrie Irving managed to find a silver lining -- and a sliver of hope for the Cavaliers playoff chances -- while dealing with his latest injury. The All-Star point guard will miss at least two weeks with a strained biceps tendon, but hes hopeful his season is not over. "If you could take a positive from the situation, obviously that would be one, that at this point, I dont have to get surgery, which is tremendous," Irving said following shootaround Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic Courts. Clevelands leading scorer got hurt Sunday night in a loss against the Los Angeles Clippers. An MRI taken Monday revealed the strain, but not a tear, which would have ended Irvings season. Its still not a certainty hell be back, but the Cavs will rest him for two weeks before making any decisions. With 15 games left, the Cavs enter their home matchup against Miami five games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It was going to be a challenge for the Cavs to make up any ground with Irving, and now without him, theyre in a major bind. The 21-year-old was trying to strip the ball from Clippers forward Blake Griffin when his tendon gave out. "One of those freak plays against a strong individual in Blake," Irving said. "I tried to get the ball out of his hands. I knew something was wrong when I came to the bench. Obviously, I just felt just a weird feeling after that play in my shoulder. My arm looked a little different in the biceps area. Thats when I knew that I strained it." Irving will miss at least eight games. Hes already sat out 41 in three NBA seasons, leading some to label him as injury prone. Its still possible he may need an operation, but Irving is trying to be optimistic. "Well see in two weeks," he said. "Im not going to give a definitive answer because I dont know that answer. At this point, Im just going to continue to support my teammates and be on the sideline. Whatever the medical team needs me to do and whatevers in my best interests, Im going to do." With his best player out, Cavs coach Mike Brown will start Dion Waiters in the backcourt with Jarrett Jack. Cleveland could get back C.J. Miles, who has missed 12 games with a sprained ankle. Waiters has provided a spark off the bench all season, and said hes going start with the same mindset hes had as a reserve. "Just going out there playing my game, let everything come to me," he said. "Dont go out there and try to press and do things I normally dont do. Just play the game and have fun." Waiters says all the Cavs have to step it up with Irving sidelined. "Kyrie is the best player on the team," Waiters said. "But it gives other guys the chance to play and show coach things they can do. Weve got to pick it up. Everybody has to be together and play for each other. Thats the biggest thing losing a huge piece like that. We have to play the game, move the ball and have fun out there." Adrian Dantley Jersey . Reyes, 26, was traded from Atlanta to Toronto in July 2010 and spent the remainder of the season in the minors. He began 2011 in the majors and made 20 starts with the Blue Jays, going 5-8 with a 5.40 earned run average before he was waived on Aug. Kyle Korver Jersey . While plenty of statistics illustrate Torontos turnaround in the second year of manager Ryan Nelsens tenure, stopping goals is not one of them.College football decisions often have a domino effect that can change the landscape of a program and nobody knows this more than the upstart Baylor Bears. In 2007, four-star dual-threat Quarterback Robert Griffin III had committed to the University of Houston under then Head Coach Art Briles. When Briles left Houston to take over Baylor, Griffin III, the top commit in Briles recruiting class, decided to follow him. After winning the Heisman in his junior season Griffin was the 2nd pick in the NFL draft. Many thought the Bears would return to the middle-of-the-pack in the Big 12 without their star QB, but all it took was one player and one very gifted head coach to turn the program around. Baylor currently sits at #5 in the BCS polls with a perfect 7-0 record, tops in their conference. They score the most points per game in the country (63.9) and have the 6th best defence (15.9). QB Bryce Petty has 18 TD and 1 INT and former Oregon Duck Lache Seastrunk has 869 yards rushing and 11 TD in 7 games. The offence is incredible, the defence can keep up and all because players are lining up to attend Baylor. 10 years ago Baylor had the 76th best recruiting class out of 117 Division I programs. Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette and San Jose State were among schools with better results. Now thanks to Griffin III and the recent success of the Bears program, last year Baylor ranked 31st. And this years crop is expected to be even better. Oregon is three spots higher in the polls and steals much of the attention as the must-watch team in college football but Baylor is every bit as fast and exciting. Baylor scored 8 touchdowns against Kansas last weekend, none of those drives took longer than 2 minutes. The likelihood of the Ducks and Bears meeting in a National Championship isnt very high with Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State still amongst the unbeaten, but it would be amazing if they did. The two schools are both on pace to break the record for most yards-per-game. The one knock against Baylor has been their strength of schedule, but thats about to change in a big hurry. Their remaining five games are against Big 12 teams that are either currently ranked or were ranked earlier in the season.dddddddddddd They stay home for dates with #10 Oklahoma and #15 Texas Tech before travelling to No. 18 Oklahoma State and Texas Christian. The finale on December 7th will see the Texas Longhorns come to town in a game that could decide the conference. That sentence alone has Bears fans in a place they werent sure theyd ever get, among the elite teams in a power conference. Baylor has had a swift turnaround thanks to one electric player taking the country by storm. Other notes from around the NCAA: - Many thought Penn State would gain momentum after their thrilling 4-overtime win against Michigan but that didnt prove to be the case. The Nittany Lions were handed their worst defeat in nearly 114 years when they travelled to Ohio State. The 63-14 loss wasnt as bad as the 64-5 drubbing at the hands of the Duquesne Athletic Club back in 1899. - Florida State rolled over NC State with 35 first quarter points. It broke a 4 game losing streak for FSU as a ranked team versus an unranked NC State. - Recruiting kickers is going to become a bigger deal – Missouris undefeated season was shattered when Andrew Baggett missed a 24-yarder in double-overtime to hand South Carolina a victory. - LSU holds the longest non-conference winning streak in the FBS era – 45 straight wins. Part of that comes from scheduling games like this past weekend against the Furman Paladins. - Northern Illinois remained unbeaten with a 59-20 win over Eastern Michigan. 4 different Huskies combined for 7 touchdown passes in the win. QB Jordan Lynch threw for four scores, ran for one and even had his first career TD reception. - More from the kicking game, San Diego State relied on Seamus McMorrow twice in their bid to upend undefeated Fresno State. McMorrow missed two tries, including a 37-yarder as regulation expired that would have won the game. The Aztecs fell in overtime 35-28. - Auburn is on a four-game winning streak for the first time since 2010 when they went 14-0 and won a National Championship with Cam Newton as their QB. ' ' '
