The Barclay Breakdown

The Barclay Breakdown

The Barclays, a family that had otherwise kept the details of its remarkable rise secret, burst onto the pages of the financial press in February 2020 after it was revealed that an “elaborate system of covert recording,” planted in the Ritz Hotel conservatory plug socket by Alistair Barclay, had captured Frederick Barclay discussing the sale of the hotel.

Frederick and his daughter Amanda pursued breach of confidence, misuse of private information and breach of data protection rights allegations in the U.K court. Those allegations have now been settled.

In June 2020, David’s heirs released a defense statement admitting to the bugging, and acknowledging that recordings “were made and discussed” but denied any conspiracy “to injure any business or financial interest of Frederick or Amanda,” adding that their actions “were the result of serious concerns about aspects of Frederick’s conduct” that were “necessary and reasonable” to protect “business interests from potential damage.”

In the statement, David’s sons said that they “regret any distress caused.” But—as with all succession melodramas—added, “Our intention has always been to act in the best interests of the entire family.” pg slot

The sale of the Ritz—to Qatari Abdulhadi Mana Al-Hajri, according to documents available on the U.K.’s Companies House registry—in April 2020 had become a proxy battleground for control of the family fortune, which was split 25% to 75% in favor of David’s heirs.

After losing influence over the sale of the Ritz, Frederick and Amanda were “flabbergasted,” by having it sold without their knowledge or consent, according to an inside source. Believing they had larger offers on the table, a confidant of Frederick described the deal to Forbes as “baffling.”

However, Frederick—who recently paid out a reported $140 million divorce settlement—now looks to have made peace with his nephews, given the family’s new statement.

Frederick, the surviving Barclay, told Forbes on the day of his twin brother’s death: “It was a great journey in everything that we did, the good, the bad, the ugly . . . we experienced it from being bombed out of our beds in Coventry to the deals that we made and the ones that got away.

“We were twins from the beginning until the end. He was the right hand to my left and I was his left hand to his right. We’ll meet again.”
